You’ve probably noticed that the shipping weight your agent quotes doesn’t match the item’s actual weight. That’s volumetric weight — and understanding it changes how you approach hauls.
What Is Volumetric Weight?
Volumetric weight takes into account the space a package occupies, not just how heavy it is. The formula: Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 5000 = volumetric weight in kg. Carriers charge you whichever is higher — actual weight or volumetric weight.
Practical Example
A hoodie might weigh 400g on a scale but in its box takes up a volume that calculates to 900g volumetric weight. You pay for 900g. A shoe box is even worse — significant volume with relatively low weight.
How to Minimize Volumetric Weight
- Remove shoe boxes: The single best move for footwear
- Vacuum pack clothes: Compresses volume by up to 70% on soft garments
- Request packaging removal: Strip unnecessary outer boxes and bags
- Consolidate orders: Better packing efficiency
For most clothing and footwear hauls, volumetric weight is the limiting factor. A puffer jacket weighing 600g might have a volumetric weight of 2.5kg. That’s why vacuum packing saves so much money.
